Centrifugal Juicer vs. Masticating Juicer?
A centrifugal juicer has a flat blade with teeth rotating at very high RPMs that tear through the flesh of fruits and veggies like a piranha devouring its next meal.
A masticating juicer has a more leisurely pace slowly crushing the veggies and releasing the juice. Masticating actually means chewing, and that is sort of the concept.
A centrifugal juicer is faster, but some say it introduces air into the juice, causing foam, and the spinning generates heat which can cause oxidation. To be fair, there are evangelists in both the centrifugal side and the masticating side, but we are not here to take sides.
This guide is simply meant to cover masticating juicers and what you should look for before purchasing or choosing one.
Characteristics to Consider When Choosing the Best Masticating Juicer for You
Single or Double Auger?
Single auger machines are more common, but double auger machines will extract the juice faster. An auger is like a drill or gear that the fruit or vegetable is pushed up against and crushed.
In a twin auger system, the augers are more like gears. The veggies are fed through these gears and the juice is squeezed out. This is the most efficient type of masticating possible, but these juicers usually carry a hefty price tag.
RPM Rate
Slow is the name of the game with masticating juicers. The RPM rate can range anywhere from 100 RPM to 40 RPM. It’s believed that the slower the RPM, the more nutrients vitamins and minerals are retained in the end product. They also create less heat, so less oxidation of the juice occurs.
Cleaning and Maintaining
Let’s face it, if your juicer is a chore to clean, you will avoid using it, and then it becomes an expensive kitchen decoration. It’s worth it to investigate the time it takes to clean the machine, because it will make a difference in your satisfaction.
Some masticating juicers have as little as 4 parts to clean, for others it is much more. Some have parts that are dishwasher safe to make cleaning convenient.
Size of the Feed Tube or Chute
The size of the feed tube will directly affect prep time of your veggies, another area where you will either be thrilled with your juicer or not. If it is a lot of work to get the veggies ready to make juice, you are less likely to do it, and less likely to enjoy juicing.
Noise
All juicers make noise, but as a group, masticating juicers are the quietest, and some are quieter than others. If noise, or rather, quiet, is important to you, check the juicer’s noise level.
Best Masticating Juicer for the Money
The best masticating juicer for the money is not the one with the lowest price tag. There are low price masticating juicers out there that do not extract well, have flimsy parts, or are a bear to clean.
If the juicer is wasting produce, no matter how inexpensive the unit was, it’s not a good deal. Look for a unit with high efficiency and a low price. That is the best value for the money.
Best Upright Masticating Juicer
Upright Masticating juicers take up less space than their horizontal counterparts. They usually have larger hoppers or chutes which cuts down on the prep time. They do not have all the same multipurpose features a horizontal masticating juicer does and do not perform tasks other than juicing.
A horizontal masticating juicer might double as a pasta maker whereas the vertical juicer does not. Most upright masticating juicers employ a two step extraction process, first crushing and then squeezing before the pulp is expelled, making them very efficient.
What do we mean by efficient?
Best Vertical Masticating Juicer
Vertical masticating juicers are the same as upright masticating juicers; you will see some manufacturers call them upright while others call them vertical. No big deal, right? It just like how an auger is the same as a drill or gear (in the world of masticating juicers, that is).
Best Slow Masticating Juicer
Slow masticating juicers are newer models with RPM’s below 60. It has already been said, but the lower RPM creates less heat and extracts more gently, leaving nutrients intact while minimizing oxidation of the juice.
Best Commercial Masticating Juicer
For a commercial masticating juicer one will need a juicer built to last, stand up to abuse and be very easy to clean.
We found one, and the company makes a whole line of juicers. Check out our review below.
Best Omega Masticating Juicer Reviews
Omega is a popular brand in the world of masticating juicers for consumers, and with good reason, they make a high quality product and several styles of juicers, including three we covered in our reviews below.
While Omega is a great brand, the perhaps lesser known Kuvings brand could really give them a run for their money, with their attention to detail; wide mouth feed tubes, a pour sport on the juice bowl and other useful features.

REVIEW
This is a revolutionary juicer that runs at a super slow 43 RMP for the gentlest extraction. The two step extraction ensures you get the most juice out of your produce.
The chute could be a bit bigger and the hollow auger can be a problem since it collects pulp as it is working, but overall this is a great machine.

Its motor is more powerful than other juicers, which helps it stand out among other juicers. It is a good buy if you are looking for a vertical masticating juicer.

Despite having a lot of pieces initially, this is actually one of the easier to clean juicers on the market. This model extracts most of the juice leaving a dry pulp.
Where this brand shines is attention to detail. It has a stopper on the juice bowl so you can stop the flow and pour the juice into a glass, the seals are removable and made from easy to clean silicone.

No other juicer really can compare to the Super Angel All Stainless Steel Twin Gear Juicer. It’s a deceptively simple design; huge juicing gears, all stainless steel construction and its efficiency at juicing makes this juicer stand out above all others.

REVIEW
This Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Juicer is a great masticating juicer with a mid-range price point. It is efficient, produces dry pulp, and maximizes juice output, saving you money on produce.
Of all the masticating juicers on the market, this is one of the easiest to clean; once you have your routine down it can be cleaned in two or three minutes.

REVIEW
The Breville Masticating juicer is a decent machine with an attractive design, quiet operation, an upright profile and it is not a space hog on the counter. It is not without its flaws however.
This machine tends to clog up, especially when juicing greens. It does have a reverse function to clear clogs. It seems like you need to cut fruit and veggies into very small pieces for this machine, smaller than you would for other masticating juicers.
It efficiently extracts juice from greens, but the extra time and effort put into using this machine may test your patience.
We hope our guide has helped you decide which the best masticating juicer is for you.
